The Exploratorium began experimenting in SL in early 2006, broadcasting a live Webcast of the total solar eclipse that occurred on March 29 to an in-world audience. We also created  a public education program around this unique astronomical event.  The experience allowed SL residents to view the Webcast live as it originated from Side, Turkey. The program was presented by a team of Exploratorium. Scientists and videographers in partnership with NASA’s Sun-Earth Connection Forum. Residents asked in-world hosts about eclipses and interacted with several exhibits developed to show how eclipses occur.

The successful experience encouraged us to create a museum in the SL region of Midnight City called The ‘Splo.  This industrial-looking space is filled with hands-on exhibits demonstrating  many principles of human perception.

The ‘Splo spawned a larger effort: an island estate called Sploland.  This playful space contains many of the same exhibits that are featured in The ‘Splo, plus much more.  Many of Sploland’s exhibits take advantage of the large outdoor spaces the island offers.

The Exploratorium is now creating an official presence in SL on Exploratorium Island,  located adjacent to Sploland.  This multi-purpose space will feature both indoor and outdoor exhibit areas, a large amphitheater for Webcast and other programs, as well as teaching spaces for different audiences.  Both Sploland and Exploratorium Island are part of an archipelago of science-themed educational places called SciLands.  The Exploratorium is very interested in using collaborative multi-user environments such as SL to further engage its audiences and to extend more of its programming and educational resources into highly interactive, networked  places.
